Frequently Asked Questions
These are some questions that you might be wondering about. If you can't find the answer you are looking for please contact me and I'll happily advice you.
How do I know you are the right Counsellor for me?
Choosing a counsellor can be a daunting task and there are many of us out there which can make it more confusing. If you have read the information on here and something resonates with you it might be that we could work well together.
How do I know you are a Counsellor?
It is important that you check the counsellor you are hoping to work with is a member of a governing body (such as BACP). This means they have to work ethically and prove they have the proper qualifications, supervision and continued training. Unfortunately there are people practicing as counsellors who have not got the proper requirements. The logo below shows you I am accredited and registered.
What happens in our first session
The first session might feel quite daunting. I know it can be hard to sit (virtually or actually) in front of someone you don't know and share deep feelings. Usually I ask a question like:
How can I help you?
What brings you to Counselling and why now?
In the first session I usually ask more questions than normal but that's so I can find out a bit about you and where you are at. I will take things at your speed.
How many sessions will I need?
This is entirely up to you. I usually suggest that you commit for at least 6-12 sessions in the first instance. It's unlikely that you will find lasting change to your life in less.
What happens if I miss a session?
I understand that sometimes sessions get missed due to illness, work, etc and if you give me at least 48 hours then we can rearrange with no charge to you. However, if you give me less than 48 hours notice then you may be charged. Usually we agree to the same time session each week, however if you miss too many sessions in a short space of time I may not be able to reserve that slot for you. We may discuss if Counselling now is the right time for you.
